Mira Nair, award-winning director of Salaam Bombay and The Namesake among others, adapts one of the longest single-volume novels, over 1,300 pages with more than a 100 characters, as a web-series for BBC. A Suitable Boy is ready to stream on BBC from July 26.
Set in post-independence India, it is a story of a mother’s attempt to find her daughter a suitable boy, embedded in a historic moment of bloodshed, chaos, land reforms, and class barriers.
The trailer begins with a voiceover that says “No one can be sure of what the future will be.” We then see Tanya Maniktala as Lata, telling her family that she doesn’t want to get married even though they ask her to marry the man of their choice.
On the other hand, there is Maan Kapoor (Ishaan Khatter), who is in love with a courtesan named Saeeda Bai (Tabu). The duo’s crackling chemistry is the highlight of the trailer.
